Yo Mon is so excited to be involved again this year with SkimBash, the premier Pro/Am skim boarding contest on the JerseyShore. This weekend, the first event takes place in Belmar. On Saturday, there will be preliminary heats, and Sunday will bring the semi-finals and finals. Skim boarders of all ages and skill levels are welcome! Riders who participate in both SkimBash events, this weekend in Belmar and again in September at Sea Bright, will earn Skim USA points. This is a big event for the Jersey Shore and will last all day Saturday and Sunday until 5 PM. Grab your sunblock and head on over!
Just days after Hurricane Sandy hit last year, there was an a saltwater lake courtesy of the Atlantic Ocean in the middle of the town of Belmar, and the mile and a half long boardwalk was completely gone in some places. No one was quite sure how or when Belmar would recover. Now, the boardwalk is back and better than ever, Ocean Avenue is no longer a sandlot and the beach is open and ready for visitors! Belmar is ready for Skim Bash in large part due to the work of its community. The residents of Belmar have been working—and working together—all winter to get Belmar ready for the summer season, for vacationing families and day-trippers, tourists and locals. They’re ready to see their town fill up again, to see life return to normal, and SkimBash plans to bring the crowds!
In September, SkimBash’s second event will take place in Sea Bright, another Jersey Shore community hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. Recovery is taking a little longer there than in Belmar, but we can’t wait until September when we’ll be sponsoring SkimBash’s cash prize and raffling off a Yo Mon branded skim board! The beach is ready and open and businesses are working extra hard to get open for the summer season, but with almost half the population of the town still displaced, it’s been a long road back for Sea Bright, with miles still to go.
We hope SkimBash and the history it brings with it will pull people back to the Jersey Shore again this summer. Belmar and Sea Bright have worked so hard to get back, why not celebrate and make new memories this year? Let’s make the 10th anniversary of SkimBash better than all the years before! Come out to Bel Mar this weekend; and in September, take a ride over to Sea Bright. Bring your skim boards, support local businesses, buy a raffle ticket, eat some yogurt, and hang out with some of the Jersey Shore’s most resilient folks.
